Meet Keith Lane on his journey as he seeks connection and identity
In this Artist Profile we hear from Keith Lane about his artist journey, experiences and inspiration.
What led you into your artistic career?
What do you love about working as an artist?
Working as an artist enables me to explore ideas and experience via visual means, the connection through history with human culture.
A sense of discovery, as in I wonder what will emerge as the next work. Bringing something new into the world and sharing that experience with others.
What mediums do you like to work in and how did you start with them?
Exhibiting Artist Keith Lane
Do you lead any workshops or classes?
I used to teach visual arts at TAFE in Sydney. The experience of passing on my experience and knowledge in art was most satisfying.
As was the experience of vicarious art making with other artists via the classes whether in painting, drawing, printmaking or sculpture.
What do you wish you knew about having an artistic business before you started?
How do you nurture your creative muse, what inspires you?
Staying connected to the world and inspired by my environment.
Twenty-five years in Sydney I was mainly concerned with the figure in a fairly introspective mode of thinking.
Now I’m in Tasmania I have gradually transitioned to the physical environment about me.
Perhaps also looking to history for connection and identity.
What unexpected opportunities have flowed from being an exhibiting artist?
The social connection with like minded people.
What’s the best piece of advice you’ve been given about living a creative life?
Best advice given and passed on is to keep working and making work you truly believe in and not to pander to the art market.
Strive to make connections with others through visual forms that is input as well as output.
Keith Lane’s best 3 ways to build your artistic skills:
- Start young
- Pay close attention to other established and recognised artists work at any opportunity
- Do a great deal of work in different mediums for a whole lifetime of exciting discovery and perpetual renewal and growth.
About the Artist
I moved to Tasmania 9 years ago from Sydney and haven’t regretted the move for a second. The first visit here instantly felt like home and not just because it reminded me of the south of England.
I was born, grew up and went to art school in London and moved to Australia 34 years ago and then onto Deloraine. The classic ‘tree change’ I guess you’d say.
The dramatic difference in environment has led to gradual change in the work I do, now focusing on painting – drawing it’s inspiration from my new environment.
My landscapes are rarely direct ‘portraits’ of specific places more an emotional and experiential response to place. My return trip to London four years ago re-ignited my love of the painters of the sublime landscape of Europe as with the incomparable Turner.
I have merged that earliest of influences with my Tasmanian experience as an artist
Keith won the Art As Mania prize in our 2022 Artist in Residence Trail Tasmania Art Exhibition (now called Art Trails Tasmania Art Exhibition).

Artist Profile Stories
I want there to be more arts and crafts in our world, in our communities and in our own lives. Hopefully you’ve found this blog post inspiring and interesting.
So I’m creating, with your help, Art Trails Tasmania, allowing all of us who feel this love to create more of it.
And the Art Trails Tasmania blog is a key part of making this happen, telling the stories of members. It’s about what they have happening with workshops and classes, exhibitions, open studio trails, where to find their outlets, markets, fairs and festivals so you can shop their creations as well as their art and craft retreats.
Also being shared are the supporters of our artists, the galleries, shops, cafes, art societies and groups, places to stay and artist in residencies.
