Mixing Colour, Brightness & Abundance
My love of colour started when I began selling in art galleries. Black, white and grey do not work.
I try to create a picture in my head. My boxes of coloured wool I could not be without, as they give me great joy.
My collection is of anything over 8 ply, plus ribbons, netting, and many different textiles.
Then there is my glass bead collection, which is the same vibrant colours.
The brighter and larger, the better, consisting of wire balls, charms and much more.
A Studio About Colour by The River
I love working in my studio overlooking the Tamar River and mountains beyond. I moved here in 2011.
Before this, I lived all my life in Victoria, being first the Dandenongs, second Gippsland, and third the Murray River.
It is such a peaceful area where I now reside, with my artist friends who appreciate what I design.
Starting with Textiles
I started off knitting Fair Isle jumpers, which progressed into knitting for shops, following my sister.
My mother was a dressmaker, designing ballroom dresses for my sister and our wedding dresses.
It was so easy to follow in their footsteps.
For many years I knitted on Singer knitting machines.
I feel I just fell into working in a studio after a few months of being in Tasmania.
A Studio Journey
I had a window space studio at the Deloraine Creative Studios for 11 years.
I love designing windows as well as making. You have to get it right, how to make the studio stand out for people to notice my creations.
This led me to helping at the local show society, and I just adore doing exhibitions.
I have now moved to Riverside and have a bedroom set up as a studio displaying all my wares.
Making with Bright Bold Colours
My first creation was making sewn scarves, laying the yarn and many textiles out on Solvy, then sewing many times.
It took a lot of time making all the bright, bold colours work together and making them harmonious. I was very fortunate that the local gallery in Yarragon took these into their bright gallery.
Knitting Machine Creations
Moving onto my next project, when I was using my knitting machine, I had a workshop with an English lady about knitting with wire and pearls.
So many years later, I turned it into knitting by hand to create a bracelet. The only thing is, I did not know how to put together the clasp part, so I enlisted the help of my son.
Workshops and Sharing Skills
My first workshop in my studio had five ladies who came up from Hobart, two hours away, to make a bracelet. I then found out one was left-handed. There was no way I could get her to knit, but she did in the end, not using any beads.
At the end of the day, they all finished their bracelets and were very proud of their finished projects, and they drove back to Hobart. The no-bead lady threaded beads onto hers, and it looked beautiful.
Creative Events and A Vibrant Artist Community
The West Tamar has many artists living in the area. I have been giving workshops to some wonderful people.
My latest workshop for Seniors Week in October had 16 people in a hall.
It echoed so much that I had to give up talking. Then they were calling out that the needles were too thin!
In the end, many had bracelets that were too long because of larger needles and too much chatting.
But they all went home with a finished bracelet and were very proud of their knitting.
Colour, An Exhibition and Unexpected Results
I love having an exhibition and displaying my work. The first one at Wynyard was huge, and many people came and admired everything.
Admired it, they did, but they did not buy anything—they were so taken in with my bright colours!
I packed up after six weeks and went back to my studio.
Surprisingly, I then had so many people from Wynyard buying my jackets, scarves, and jewellery.
I later received an invite to a fashion parade in their town, which my granddaughter and I attended.
Mainly, my jackets sold out very quickly, and I made many new friends.
Understanding Timing and Location for Your Creative Income
Having the studio in Deloraine was the best thing I have ever done, as it was a road to the Spirit of Tasmania ferry.
Nearly everyone called in to buy last-minute gifts, for example, for people looking after their house or pets.
They were filling in time around 4:00 pm until it was time to catch the ferry.
My studio sales profited from this, which kept me busy at night knitting to replenish stock.
I did this while watching TV. I cannot knit without watching TV, as it passes the time away.
