Mediums and Themes for our Art Exhibition

Many art exhibitions are focused on one type of medium, whether that be painting, sculpture, textiles, and have categories based on that particular medium.

The Art Trails Tasmania exhibition reflects the diversity of artist in residency programs and welcomes entries across a diverse range of mediums. So our exhibition themes need to embrace this diversity. Instead of having categories such as watercolour landscape or portraits, our themes are designed to be open to your interpretation and include:

Vibrant Communities – ideal for representing the people, communities, farms, business, shacks and villages, towns and cities of Tasmania.

Waters of Life – taking inspiration from the beautiful Tasmanian waterways and coastlines, flora and fauna, activities such as fishing and paddling.

Wildlife Wonders – celebrating the diverse and captivating wildlife, the flora and fauna, of Tasmania.

Mountain Inspirations – showcasing the magnificence of the ever present Tasmanian mountains and highlands, this can also include the flora and fauna.

Works can be representative to abstract to graphical and anything in between.  We do welcome Artist Statements and information about works as well. Sending in these details is preferred.

We do use the image emailed through with the entry form as the basis of social media post images that are shared during the exhibition on our Facebook and Instagram pages. So you can be tagged, do please include your own social media profile link. For example, our Facebook link is www.facebook.com/arttrailstasmania

Mediums accepted include textiles (weaving, felting, embroidery etc), painting (watercolour, oil, acrylic etc), prints (woodcut, lino etc), photography, woodwork, sculpture (metal, wood, fibre etc),  glass (blown, mosaic etc), ceramics and more.

    Nominating Your Preferred Exhibition Venue

The Entry Form allows you to nominate three preferred galleries that you would like your work to be shown in.

We will do our best to have your work in either your first or second preference but can not guarantee which location it will end up being.

All of your entries will be in the one location, so if you enter three peices, they will be in the same gallery to make drop off easy for you.

A lot of care and thought will go into allocating which works to which galleries, keenly taking into account the preferences of our artists, the size of the gallery space and the desired mix of works for each space.

We want to have an interesting mixture of works at each location, creating a fascinating experience for visitors, connecting with potential buyers and visitors from across the state and the mainland (our international friends are always welcome too!).

We do understand that as much as we will authentically try to make everyone happy with the exhibition venue that their work will be shown in, that given the odds, someone may be disappointed, but please rest assured, all decisions are being made in good faith for you.

    Prizes!

It’s an art exhibition so there’s prizes!

The Empire Hotel in Deloraine is generously sponsoring a prize with a wonderful accommodation package of two nights. This is great news because they have super comfy beds and delicious food to the value of $300! Join The Empire on Facebook!

Art as Mania is sponsoring with $100 Gift Voucher – with loads of Tasmanian arts and crafts you’ll be spoilt for choice. Join Art As Mania on Facebook.

Creatively Belle is sponsoring with a $100 Cash Prize. Join Creatively Belle on Facebook.

Spreyton Picture Framing is sponsoring with a $100 Framing Gift Voucher.

Going from one venue to five venues is changing how we’ll be doing prizes. My goal is to have at least one prize (hopefully three) per venue but I need more sponsors for this. Can you help with making connections with sponsors please?

For the first time, we will have a People’s Choice Prize for each venue.

I’m very grateful that past years’ sponsors are returning and I’m looking forward to gathering some more Tasmanian support.

We are very much a grass roots event by artists for artists and are hoping to be able to add to the Prizes on offer. If you would like to be involved and sponsor do please let us know. We also promote our prize sponsors as a way of saying thank you.

    Art Exhibition Entry Size Requirements

We have set a 5 kg weight limit on sculptures and a maximum size of 45cm x 45cm limit on all art works for two key reasons, the size of our gallery spaces and  shipping via Australia Post.

Entries from Miniature size to 45cm x 45cm, including A4 and A3, are welcome.

    A3 Ideal Sizing

This 45cm x 45cm size works ideally for a popular square deep edge canvas as well as A3.

So think of an A3 frame with a work that’s either A3 or A4 with matt board size, portrait or landscape format.

    Miniature Paintings Welcome

In previous years we have had a small number of Miniature paintings entered and it would be a joy to have more entries this year of this fascinating format.

Plus, Miniatures are very easy for posting across the country.

    Posting in Entries

For any pieces being posted to us for the exhibition be able to be returned in a provided red and white Australia Post satchel. (There’s no benefit shipping with Express Post satchels from Tasmania so don’t spend the extra money).

We’ve learnt that the tracked red and white prepaid satchels are the easiest to work with.

From what we understand, the red and white satchels can now all take 5kg.

Tasmanian based and delivering yourself? Delivery in person to the gallery that you’re work will be in is most welcome.

    Entries from Within Australia Only

Again, this is dictated by postage. As a return addressed red and white Australia Post satchel needs to be sent with posted in entries, we’re restricted to Australian addresses only. I’ve been horrified by the ridiculous costs for posting overseas. I’m sorry if this causes any disappointments.

    Self Addressed Return Satchels

We’ve learnt that is can be easier to have a label ready to go for your return red and white satchel so it can be used to address the satchel if need. The means for sold works the satchel can be returned to you without it being written on allowing you to use it another time or used to send your work to the buyer.

    Presenting Your Work

Works must be suitably framed, ready for hanging with ‘D’ rings, labelled with your name, the chosen theme, medium, title of work and sale price. Labels need to be securely attached so they do not fall off for the duration of the art exhibition.

Does your work need a plinth or something specific to display it? Do please let us know well ahead (by 30th September) so we can be organised with it.

    Canvases, Boards and Frames

Works may be entered unframed on deep edged canvas or professional art boards.

Framed thin edged canvases may be entered.

Only quality frames are acceptable as the $2 shop ones can fall apart.

    D Rings and Displays

For hanging work we need good quality D Rings securely attached with hanging wire or cord to safely hang your work. No D Rings with cord/wire, no hanging. Attaching D Rings is the responsibility of the entrant, not our gallery teams.
