Sashiko is a beautiful Japanese stitching technique that invites you to slow down, embrace mindful making and enjoy the simple pleasure of creating something by hand.
Join me for a beginner-friendly workshop where we’ll explore Sashiko stitching using a gorgeous Australian wildflower panel featuring proteas, gum blossoms, kangaroo paws and delicate butterflies. About the Sashiko Workshop
Do you want to learn Sashiko stitching and don’t know where to start? This traditional Japanese stitching technique is gaining popularity because it is a delightful mindful slow stitch practice.
I was drawn to Sashiko while I was recovering from exhaustion with caring for my beloved mum and moving through grief after her passing. For me, it has been deeply restorative with the simple action of being present as I stitch something beautiful. It is a healing and nurturing practice.
I’ve been able to take my Sashiko stitching in a convenient pouch to art and craft groups, make and mend afternoons, visits with friends and family and on get-aways. The joy of sharing these projects with friends and family has brought light and joy into my day and I hope to share this with others.
Starting with Printed Sashiko Panels
My entry point with Sashiko has been through printed panel designs. I’m finding them a great entry point into a traditional craft that focuses on mindfulness, creativity and mending.
Versatile and Foundation Slow Stitch Skills
What also appeals to me with Sashiko stitching is how transferable the technique is to quilting, art embroidery, mending and reuse. It is a lovely introductory skill to develop for an intentional craft practice centred on sustainability and slow stitching.
Sashiko is also a craft that is ideally suited for those travelling or commuting as it requires only a few small tools – needle, thread, scissors and fabric.
