A Flourishing Arts and Crafts Group
Makers at the Courthouse is situated in a beautiful 19th century municipal Courthouse. In recent years the building was used as the local council chambers until the 1990’s.
Makers at the Courthouse has been open since 2011. We were originally known as Upper Pier Arts & Craft Co-op.
We are a Co-op of artists and crafters and everyone who displays their works in the shop or gallery is a member and are encouraged to be active in the day to day running of the business.
Makers at the Courthouse took over sole residency in 2022.
Supporting Local Artists & Makers
We like to support local artists by show casing their works in our gallery and gift shop. Most of our artists are from the Lilydale area but we also have works from artists within the Tamar Valley region.
Growing into the Makers at the Courthouse
Our gallery space was originally the local library. Several years ago the library merged with the school library, leaving the room vacant.
The room was then used as a community meeting room until Makers at the Courthouse took over the lease for the building. The space is perfect as a gallery, with large windows letting in light to naturally display the art works.
Pinky Sims is a local artist and member of the gallery. She ran a very successful art gallery in Launceston for many years. When Pinky joined the gallery she saw the potential to turn the disused meeting room into an art gallery.
The Joy of Visitors
Lilydale is on the North East tourist route so many of our customers and visitors are visiting from the mainland and overseas. We love chatting to them about the local area and the artists who display art in our gallery.
We are so fortunate to have such talented makers/artists involved with the shop and gallery. There is so much talent in the North East of Tasmania.
We recently had a talented young musician come into the shop. She just happened to have her ukulele in her camper van. It didn’t take much encouragement for her to bring her instrument inside and play a song about the shop that she had made up on the spot.
We have some very interesting customers popping in from time to time.

And the Art Trails Tasmania blog is a key part of making this happen, telling the stories of members. It’s about what they have happening with workshops and classes, exhibitions, open studio trails, where to find their outlets, markets, fairs and festivals so you can shop their creations as well as their art and craft retreats.
Also being shared are the supporters of our artists, the galleries, shops, cafes, art societies and groups, places to stay and artist in residencies.
