Meet Seascape Artist Steve Myers

I love finding out new ways to paint and I really enjoy the challenges that come with learning new techniques.

Because I love to paint seascapes, I am never too far from inspiration, given the dynamic nature of the ocean.

I love to paint Tasmanian seascapes. I am drawn to the unique beauty and power of the ocean, particularly the west coast of Tasmania.

I often find myself in complete solitude at many Tasmanian beaches bringing a sense of awe and excitement to want to paint the scene in front of me.

Finding a Path to Painting Through Love

It was actually my partner Sue who led me to painting. Sue painted a wave for me as a Christmas present.

She had never painted before and given my love for the sea, Sue thought it would be a great gift.

I was so happy I went out the next day and purchased all the art supplies I could. Not knowing anything about art or what I needed, I bought way too much.

I guess my art journey started there. Sue does not paint anymore (she only did the one painting for me), and I took over the house with my supplies.

Creating the Art Studio That’s Just the Right Fit

My studio space is not large, but it is big enough for me. I have a wooden easel and two large folding tables that contain my paint, books, mediums, and brushes.

I have my finished paintings on some of the walls in the studio. The studio space is actually the garage but there is a dividing wall that separates the car from my workspace.

Enjoying Sharing the Skills to Paint

I have a student who regularly comes to my studio and is learning to paint. I enjoy teaching the painting process.

I enjoy teaching anyway as I teach in the sciences at the University of Tasmania.

I find my teaching at work translates well to teaching students art.

I love to meet new people and find out about their art and journey.

I feel art can be a lonely endeavour and therefore it is good to get out and learn new skills and make new friends that have similar interests.

Making Art a Daily Routine

I feel my art has become part of my daily routine. If I miss a day, I start to get a little fidgety.

The More I Paint, the Less I Know

I feel the more I paint, the less I know. I suppose that is a form of evolution in my practice knowing where my mistakes are and how I might fix them.

A Growing Passion for Painting on Location

I have just started to paint on location.

What an amazing experience this is.

It can be very challenging but rewarding knowing you have captured the essence of the location.

Learning to Paint From Videos and Art Books

I like to watch painting videos and read about art. I spend a lot of time near the sea and that inspires me to paint and be creative.

The Value of Being Part of Exhibitions

Being involved in exhibitions helps to understand the people’s likes and dislikes about art. Although art is subjective, I do find that exhibitions can give you some insight into what is popular.

How to Grow as an Artist

Don’t worry about what other people think and be humble in your creative pursuits.

Dedicated practice, study nature often, and build your knowledge base about art.

About the Artist

I am a self-taught emerging artist with a passion for painting seascapes.

I have surfed and lived by the ocean my whole life and I am inspired by the natural beauty and ruggedness of the West Coast of Tasmania, Australia.

My art reflects the dynamic relationship between the remoteness and solitude one feels when visiting this region.

Head over now to explore Steve’s gallery and website and follow him on Instagram for regular, delightful inspiring seascapes.

Artist Profile Stories

I want there to be more arts and crafts in our world, in our communities and in our own lives. Hopefully you’ve found this blog post inspiring and interesting.

So I’m creating, with your help, Art Trails Tasmania, allowing all of us who feel this love to create more of it.

And the Art Trails Tasmania blog is a key part of making this happen, telling the stories of members. It’s about what they have happening with workshops and classes, exhibitions, open studio trails, where to find their outlets, markets, fairs and festivals so you can shop their creations as well as their art and craft retreats.

Also being shared are the supporters of our artists, the galleries, shops, cafes, art societies and groups, places to stay and artist in residencies.
