Coral Sculpture Workshop with Christie Lange

Inspired by the sea and shaped by your hands, this workshop invites you to bring the ocean home.

Create a sculptural coral form that ripples with texture and movement, then pause for a gourmet grazing platter as conversation and creativity flow like tides across the studio table.

Inspired and Informed by the Ocean

The ocean has always been a storyteller — and in this hands-on workshop, you’ll become one too.

Inspired by the sea’s intricate coral forms, textures, and living colours, this 4.5-hour creative immersion invites you to shape your own sculptural coral piece from clay.

Guided by artist Christie Lange, you’ll explore hand-building techniques to bring movement, rhythm, and organic texture to your work.

Coral Sculpture in Clay

From small coral buds to branching forms and reef-like clusters, each sculpture grows intuitively, echoing the beauty and fragility of marine ecosystems.

As you create, conversation and creativity flow together, connecting you to the slow, mindful process of making.

Midway through, pause to enjoy a gourmet grazing platter — a moment to savour local Tasmanian flavours and exchange stories with fellow makers.

Whether you’re a curious beginner or experienced in clay, you’ll leave with a striking, ocean-inspired artwork that brings the rhythm of the sea into your home — a lasting reminder of time spent shaping, connecting, and creating with purpose.

Workshops for Ocean Lovers

The Coral Sculpture Workshop is for ocean lovers, creatives, and anyone who feels drawn to the natural rhythms of the sea.

Perfect for curious beginners and returning makers alike, this immersive session invites you to explore form, texture, and flow while shaping your own coral-inspired sculpture.

Guided by artist Christie Lange, you’ll hand-build with clay to create intricate, organic forms — branching, rippling, or clustered — echoing the beauty and fragility of marine life. As you work, you’ll find yourself slowing into the same meditative rhythm that exists beneath the waves.

It’s a space to reconnect with creativity, immerse in the moment, and make something that carries both meaning and beauty.

Gourmet Grazing Platter to Nourish

The experience is enriched by a gourmet grazing platter, shared mid-way through the afternoon, offering a pause to savour local Tasmanian flavours and share stories with fellow makers.

Participants leave not just with a finished sculpture, but with a sense of calm accomplishment — a tactile reminder of the ocean’s poetry, and of the joy that comes from shaping something extraordinary with your own two hands.

Workshops Artist Leader

The Coral Sculpture Workshop is led by Tasmanian ceramic and sculpture artist Christie Lange, founder of Christie Lange Ceramics Studio in Binalong Bay.

Christie is widely recognised for her contemporary ceramic sculptures that explore ecology, regeneration, and the interconnectedness of natural systems — from lichens and mosses to coral colonies and kelp forests.

With over 10 years of professional experience and a Bachelor of Contemporary Arts (First Class Honours) from the University of Tasmania, Christie’s sculptural work has been exhibited widely across Tasmania and featured in numerous group shows and art prizes.

Her practice combines scientific observation with poetic interpretation, creating works that reveal the quiet intelligence of living forms.

Recipient of the Art Farm Birch’s Bay Small Sculpture Acquisitive Prize (2018) and the People’s Choice Award at the Boxed-In Small Sculpture Prize (2021), Christie brings deep sculptural insight to her teaching.

In this workshop, she guides participants through the process of building intricate coral-inspired forms, encouraging them to explore rhythm, texture, and the organic beauty of clay shaped by hand — a sculptural experience that connects creativity with the living world.

Workshops Supplies Are All Provided

Everything you need will be provided — simply bring your imagination, curiosity, and perhaps a few images of coral formations you love to inspire your sculpture.

This 4.5-hour workshop includes all clay, sculpting tools, materials, and professional kiln firings, as well as a gourmet grazing platter of local Tasmanian produce to enjoy midway through the afternoon.

Christie provides hands-on demonstrations and one-on-one guidance throughout, making this workshop ideal for both beginners and those with previous clay experience.

Allow Your Own Expression of Style to Show

More than Technique

This workshop offers more than technique; it’s an experience of connection.

As you roll, shape, and design, conversation and creativity flow naturally. You’ll feel the rhythm of making with your hands, the pleasure of mindful focus, and the quiet satisfaction of bringing an idea to life.
