Meet Lora Warman as she Reignites her Creative Voice
When I am creating an art piece, it is the actual process of making that brings me joy.
Time disappears and I become engrossed in the whole process of creating.
Not knowing what the end product is going to look like brings me joy.
The freedom of making and letting it guide me allows me to be present in the moment and just go with the flow.
From Mountains to the Sea, Historic Cities to the Sky
The huge sky, the seascape, and the various landscapes inspire me.
The various periods of architecture in Hobart and the towns influence my work.
The geometric shapes, lines, colour, and shadows that the building create also make me think about pattern and design.
The fact that you do not have to travel far before you reach the coast, or a mountain and countryside also provides me with lots of inspiring material to work with.
How to Reignite Your Creative Voice
I have always loved drawing, colouring, and collaging. Since I was a young child, I have always enjoyed crafts and art making.
Recently I spent a year attending TAFE to reignite my creative voice. The visual art’s program provided me with tasters working with various mediums and reminded me of what I used to do in high school.
Once I began creating and making again, I realised how much I loved making art.
I had spent too many years not being creative due to other commitments and it wasn’t’ until I finally allowed myself to learn again and create that my artistic voice came into being.
It was the slowing down and realising that I had to listen to my inner voice that was longing for creativity that I finally began my artistic venture.
A Passion for Creativity
I work in analog collage- paper, glue and scissors, cyanotype printing, and digital illustration.
I would like to explore more mediums, including painting, linocut, dry point printing, and ceramics.
My limited studio space does limit my exploration of mediums at present.
I rediscovered all these mediums (except digital illustration) through the visual arts program at Tas TAFE. I had previously worked in these mediums through high school and senior high school years, but many decades ago!
As for digital illustration, I love working with my iPad and have discovered the Skillshare platform which provides so many classes on creative methods.
Through Skillshare I am learning how to use Procreate to produce digital illustrations.
The Widely Accessible Studio Space
My studio space is our large square dining table and area surrounding it.
It is in sunny part of the house and is rarely used for dinners other than special occasions. It is the only space I have available. I hope in the future to have an art studio so that I can create artworks in various mediums.
How to Nurture Inspiration
By walking and visiting remote locations.
I am fascinated by the history of places and how the landscape has been altered by human behaviour over time.
This stems from my background in archaeology and museology. Visiting quiet, remote places allows me discover patterns, colours and shapes that influence my ideas.
I love to take photos of these places.
I am also inspired by the birdlife and plants of Tasmania.
I love looking closely at plants and enjoy listening to the calls of the birds.

Learn. Learn every day.
Do something for yourself that brings you joy every day.
You are your own self. Your story is your story. Your art is your art.
Write down your ideas.
Learn and practice.
Be consistent, even if it is a few minutes a day.
A Longing to Feel Joy
It all came about from a longing to feel joy within.
I doubted my abilities and worth but soon realised that it was important for me to create for myself first.
Not everyone is going to like your work, so what.
If it brings you joy, or if it matters to you, then value it.
About the Artist
I am Lora Warman, a mixed-media visual artist from Kingston, Tasmania.
My upbringing during 1960, and 1970s in Sydney to migrant Italian parents, has greatly influenced my work.
My surroundings living in Tasmania, inspire me to create when I can.
The beauty of the sky, sea, and surroundings with their ever-changing colours, smells, and sounds, inspire me.
I make art when I make the time and feel inspired to. I make it firstly for myself because it brings me a sense of peace and joy.
My artistic career fulfills my need to express creatively. I hope to work full-time in my art practice in the future.
