The workshops are from life drawing to oil painting to watercolour to coloured pencil.

Life Drawing Workshop with Manuela Pilz
Join acclaimed artist Manuela Pilz for a dynamic one-day life drawing workshop at Launceston Art Society.
Focusing on expressive, quick poses, this workshop explores form, energy and proportion using charcoal and graphite, equipping artists with practical techniques.
Drawing Experience
This workshop is best suited to artists with some prior experience in life drawing, or those eager to further develop their ability to draw the figure from life.
While the atmosphere is welcoming and supportive, the content may be challenging for absolute beginners, and some drawing experience is recommended.
Participants will gain a clear and repeatable method for approaching life drawing, particularly for short and medium-length poses.
The techniques taught during the workshop provide practical tools that can be applied immediately in future untutored sessions.
Beyond skill development, participants often experience the joy of focused immersion — spending a full day drawing, learning alongside peers, receiving personalised feedback, and seeing noticeable progress across multiple studies.
Art, Flow & Purpose: Meg Shaw’s Creative Journey
Meg Shaw shares how art brings her joy, purpose and freedom. Inspired by Tasmania’s beauty, she finds creative flow and self-expression through painting.
Rachel Harris Creates Art That Sparks Connection and Care for Wildlife

Meet Manuela Pilz
The workshop is led by Manuela Pilz, an accomplished artist with an extensive exhibition history across Australia and internationally.
She has been a finalist and award recipient in numerous major exhibitions, including the Darcy Doyle Art Award, Dean Cogle Portrait Prize and Lethbridge 20,000, with multiple commendations for portraiture and drawing. Manuela holds a Bachelor of Fine Arts (Honours) from Sheffield Hallam University in the UK and has undertaken advanced training at the Florence Academy in Italy, Julian Ashton Art School in Sydney and Studio Escalier in France.
Her teaching reflects a strong foundation in classical observation combined with expressive, contemporary practice. Manuela is known for her generous, thoughtful teaching style and her ability to support artists in developing both technical skill and creative confidence.
Workshop Supplies
Participants will be asked to bring their own drawing materials to the workshop. An extensive and detailed materials list will be provided upon booking.
A selection of shared studio equipment and additional resources will also be available on the day to support the workshop process.
This approach allows participants to work with familiar tools while ensuring essential materials are accessible, creating a well-supported and practical learning environment.

A Sense of Place – Landscape Oil Painting with Elaine Green Workshop
Join acclaimed Tasmanian artist Elaine Green for an immersive painting workshop exploring intuition, memory and place. Working in oils, participants will learn to let abstraction, gesture and process guide the emergence of narrative and landscape on the canvas.
Intuitive Painting Process
This workshop with Elaine Green invites participants into an intuitive painting process shaped by experience, memory and a deep sense of place.
Beginning from abstraction, participants will explore how brush gesture, layering and the physical manipulation of oil paint can gradually reveal an underlying narrative.
Through demonstration and guided practice, Elaine encourages artists to remain attentive to the evolving demands of a work in progress.
Techniques such as blurring, rubbing back, adding and reducing paint are explored as ways to build depth, atmosphere and emotional resonance.
Rather than working toward a predetermined outcome, participants are supported to allow the painting to emerge organically.
The workshop emphasises awareness, patience and responsiveness, offering artists a focused and immersive environment in which to develop a more intuitive, confident approach to painting.
Meet Elaine Green
Elaine Green is a highly regarded Tasmanian artist with an extensive history of national recognition. She has been a finalist in the Glover Art Prize, including a finalist selection in 2020 and a Highly Commended award in 2021, and has been recognised in numerous major Australian art prizes.
Her work is characterised by an intuitive engagement with oil paint, where paintings evolve through layers of gesture, erasure and refinement.
Beginning from abstraction, her works gradually reveal a sense of place shaped by memory, atmosphere and lived experience.
This process-driven approach results in paintings that balance emotional depth with painterly control.
As a workshop leader, Elaine brings a calm, thoughtful presence, supporting participants to develop their own intuitive voice while strengthening technical and conceptual confidence.

Workshops for Emerging Artists
This workshop is suited to artists with some painting experience who are interested in developing a more intuitive, process-driven practice.
It will particularly appeal to those drawn to landscape, abstraction and painting informed by memory and lived experience.
Participants will gain confidence in working without rigid plans, learning how to recognise when to advance, pause or refine a painting.
They will develop practical strategies for navigating uncertainty and trusting instinct while maintaining strong painterly structure.
The joy of this workshop lies in its sense of freedom and immersion.
Spending extended time with paint, gesture and surface allows artists to reconnect with the physical pleasure of painting and the quiet satisfaction of letting meaning unfold through process.

Participants will be asked to bring their own painting materials suitable for working in oils.
An extensive and detailed materials list will be provided upon booking, allowing attendees ample time to prepare and to plan.
Some shared studio resources and support materials will also be available on the day to assist the workshop process.
This ensures participants can work comfortably and confidently, with the focus remaining on exploration, experimentation and creative engagement.

Pam Lockwood – Watercolour Botanicals Workshop
Join Pam Lockwood for a hands-on watercolour botanicals workshop exploring expressive washes, texture and colour. Working step by step, participants will learn practical techniques for painting flowers while completing up to two watercolour artworks in a supportive studio environment.
Botanical Workshop
This watercolour botanicals workshop with Pam Lockwood offers participants a practical and exploratory approach to painting flowers.
Through demonstration and guided practice, Pam will share the way she builds her paintings, focusing on expressive backgrounds, controlled washes and the use of salt to create texture and interest.
Across the workshop, participants will work on two paintings.
One artwork will begin in the morning with a background wash and salt application, allowing time to dry naturally.
While this work rests, participants will start a second painting, returning to the first in the afternoon once the salt has dried and can be gently removed.
This process allows participants to understand timing, layering and sequencing , essential skills in watercolour.
The workshop balances clear instruction with hands-on experimentation, encouraging participants to explore colour, brushwork and technique in a relaxed and supportive setting.
Meet Pam Lockwood
Pam Lockwood is an experienced artist whose creative journey began early, inspired by watching her grandmother paint watercolours, particularly bird studies.
After studying art at school, Pam later returned to painting through oils before finding a strong connection with watercolour during a period of personal change.
She has undertaken extensive workshop training, completing more than twenty workshops with respected watercolour artist Tony Smibert, whom she considers a key mentor.
Other influences include John Lovett, and for botanical subjects, Nancy Tichborne.
Pam is a member of the Watercolour Society of Western Australia and has been involved with several art societies across WA.
She is currently a member of the Launceston Art Society and the North West Art Collective, and teaches watercolour landscape techniques from her home studio in Latrobe.
Her practice includes watercolour landscapes and botanicals, as well as large-scale acrylic abstracts.

Workshops Ideal for Beginners to Experienced
This workshop is suitable for beginners who have some basic drawing skills and a little experience with watercolour washes, as well as intermediate artists wishing to expand their floral painting techniques.
Absolute beginners may find the pace challenging, but those with some familiarity with watercolour will feel well supported.
Participants will gain practical skills in wash control, colour mixing, layering, and creating texture using salt.
They will also learn how to manage multiple works at different stages of completion, building confidence in their planning and decision-making.
The joy of the workshop comes from watching paintings develop, learning new techniques, and completing artworks in a friendly, encouraging environment.
Participants can expect to leave feeling inspired, more confident, and equipped with techniques they can continue to use at home.
Workshop Supplies
Participants are asked to bring their own watercolour materials.
A detailed and comprehensive materials list will be provided prior to the workshop.
In general, participants should bring artist-quality watercolour paints, a range of brushes including soft wash brushes and fine detail brushes, water containers, backing boards, 300gsm medium-grain watercolour paper, and basic studio supplies.
Items such as salt, tissues, cloths, spray bottles and hair dryers will be used during the workshop.
Some additional materials, including mixing trays and well-used brushes, will be available for purchase on the day at a small cost.
This approach ensures participants can work comfortably with familiar materials while being fully supported throughout the workshop.

Marilyn Theisel Advances Colouring Technique

This coloured pencil workshop with Marilyn Theisel provides a practical foundation for creating resolved artworks using coloured pencils across a range of subjects.
The workshop focuses on developing an understanding of light, shade and form through the careful layering of colour.
Building on techniques introduced in Marilyn’s 2025 coloured pencil foundation course, this workshop extends participants’ skills while remaining accessible to those new to the medium.
Through guided exercises and demonstrations, participants will explore how to apply colour effectively, build depth and achieve subtle tonal variation.
The workshop emphasises exploration and experimentation, encouraging participants to work with the materials they already own while learning techniques that can be adapted to different papers, pencils and styles.
The focus is on skill-building, confidence and understanding the fundamentals that support more complex coloured pencil work.
Meet Marilyn Theisel
Marilyn Theisel is a Tasmanian artist with a diverse creative background spanning textiles, drawing and mixed media.
She holds an Associate Degree in Visual Arts from the University of Tasmania and a Diploma of Design completed in Kenya, along with further training in visual arts and innovative tapestry practices in Brazil.
Beginning her formal art studies later in life through the Wicking Research in Dementia program, Marilyn’s practice has been shaped by curiosity, experimentation and a willingness to explore new materials and techniques.
Encouraged early on to pursue drawing, she has since developed a multi-disciplinary approach and is an active member of the Launceston Art Society.
Marilyn regularly participates in exhibitions and has had work published in American Color Pencil magazine.
As a workshop facilitator, she brings an encouraging, exploratory teaching style that supports artists at different stages of their creative journey.

Ideal for Growing Your Skills
This workshop is suitable for artists with some drawing experience who are interested in developing their coloured pencil skills, as well as beginners who are keen to learn strong foundational techniques.
While it follows on from the 2025 foundation workshop, it is designed to stand alone and welcomes participants new to Marilyn’s teaching.
Participants will gain a clearer understanding of colour layering, tonal control and how light and shade create form.
They will develop practical techniques for building images gradually and confidently, using coloured pencil as a serious and versatile art medium.
The joy of this workshop comes from discovery, experimenting with colour, seeing drawings evolve through layers, and gaining confidence in a medium that rewards patience and attentiveness.
Participants often leave with renewed enthusiasm and practical skills they can continue to build on at home.
Workshop Supplies
Participants will be asked to bring their own coloured pencil materials.
An extensive and detailed materials list will be provided upon booking.
In general, participants are encouraged to bring a set of coloured pencils they already own, including a broad range of colours, along with suitable paper (at least 200 gsm), basic drawing tools and simple accessories used in coloured pencil work.
Some shared materials will be available on the day to support the workshop and allow participants to trial additional tools.
This approach ensures participants can work comfortably with familiar materials while still having access to extra resources as needed.
