A Love for Nature Shines Through Jane Seychell’s Art

My work captures the realism of a moment in time. I use colour pencils to blend hues and bring my art to life. My subjects range from childhood memories to the vibrant flora around me.

A love for nature shines through as I depict wildlife, from tiny bees to birds and other Australian animals. I also find joy in creating pet portraits for fur baby parents.

I am fortunate to live on the stunning East Coast of Tasmania, surrounded by flora and fauna, with the hum of the ocean as my backdrop. My inspiration for my flora and fauna art comes from short walks in nature, admiring all that our amazing ecosystem has to offer.

Constantly Creating Art

I am a self-taught artist and have been creating for as long as I can remember. I’ve explored various mediums, from ink drawings on t-shirts to acrylic painting and lino printing.

Like many artists, I found more time during COVID to refine my skills and focus on what I love most: colour pencil.

Pet Portrait Artist

This allowed me to perfect my realism work, starting with pet portraits for friends and family. Eventually, I built a website to offer my skills more broadly, capturing the special bond between pets and their humans.

Opening a Gallery in St Helens

Recently, I took the leap and opened a gallery to feature my work from the past 4-5 years. Additionally, I’ve invited other local artists to showcase their talents, creating a vibrant community of creativity.

A Studio Becomes an Art Gallery

My studio space began on the dining room table. As my work grew larger, I transformed a spare room into my art space.

While I still have that art room, most of my creating now happens in my gallery studio. I love that customers can see my work come to life as they explore the gallery.

Having a gallery has allowed me to share my passion and skills with with others, offering classes for kids and adults.

I absolutely love the way it allows students a safe space to express themselves and talk about their day whilst creating and learning new skills.

Being Part of Art Exhibitions

I understand the struggle of creating without a platform to showcase your work. Opening a gallery and participating in exhibitions allows me to support other artists on their journey.

I believe art is an expression of self, aiming to connect with viewers emotionally and visually, bringing joy into their everyday lives.

Growing Artistically

My art began with cartoon-style drawings. Initially, I added more line work and experimented with various materials, including canvas, calico, clothing, and paper.

After exploring these options, I found that paper and colour pencil suit me best at this stage of my career.

However, I remain open to trying alternative mediums as I continue my artistic journey.

I tend to be drawn (pardon the pun 🙂 ) flicking through old art books, nature photography walking in nature, going to art museums and galleries…

I love to see the skills, passion and emotions that artists use to connect to viewers.

Sharing Your Art on the Socials

I feel like it is very important to share on social media and not only leave it to the gallery ( I”m still working on this) .

It is also a great way to grow your audience and find new collectors.

I would definitely encourage emerging artists to enter group exhibitions or work towards solo exhibitions as it is very rewarding to see your work hanging on the walls with your peers.

Advice for Emerging Artists

If you have the chance, I would definitely encourage emerging artists to work on marketing especially for social media and email.

I feel like it would also be beneficial to have a basic understanding of bookkeeping.

My advice to emerging artists would BELIEVE IN YOURSELF!

Keep on creating and if you have a dream follow it any way you can! Even if this means focusing on your art practice for three hours a week until you find the courage to move forward and make a career from your art.

Set Aside Time for Art and Creating

The best ways I’ve found to build on my art are to set aside time for playing and creating, experimenting with new ideas until I find what works for me.

Connecting with other artists and finding a supportive community is invaluable.

Keep creating—through practice and persistence, you’ll learn and grow as an artist.

And be patient with yourself and trust the process.
