Vintage Colour Wheels Illustration

This fascinating digital print of a vintage illustration exploring colour wheels looks at chromatic harmony. The three colour wheels here are Warm, Cool and Neutral (greys).

In the 19th century, painters used a compass with colour wheels to navigate chromatic harmony. These tools helped artists select and combine colours based on complementary, analogous, or triadic schemes, enhancing their ability to achieve balanced and visually pleasing compositions.

Creative uses for this digital print include creating your own print for the studio, home or work spaces and incorporating into your own creative practices such as mixed media, colour journaling, colour theory exploration etc.

The Story of Charles Hayter and the Painters Compass

In the 19th century, Charles Hayter, a British painter and educator, developed a notable tool known as the “painter’s compass with colour wheels” to aid artists in colour theory and composition.

Hayter recognised the importance of understanding colour relationships in painting, and his invention facilitated this understanding through practical application.

Colour Wheels

The painter’s compass consisted of a rotating disc divided into segments representing primary, secondary, and tertiary colours. Artists could select a colour on the outer wheel and align it with another on the inner wheel to determine complementary, analogous, or contrasting colour combinations. This enabled them to achieve harmonious palettes and balanced compositions.

Hayter’s tool not only simplified colour selection but also emphasised the scientific principles of colour theory, influencing how artists approached their work. It provided a systematic approach to colour mixing and helped artists create artworks that resonated visually and emotionally with viewers. Hayter’s contribution remains significant in the history of art education, highlighting the intersection of artistry and scientific inquiry in the 19th century.
