Finding the Joy and Thrill of Creativity with Steve Myers
The thrill of experimenting with new techniques, materials, or concepts can be incredibly fulfilling.
Seeing how my work resonates with others, evokes emotions, or sparks conversations can be immensely rewarding.
Knowing that my art has touched someone can bring great joy.
Also, the process of continually learning and improving my skills can be very gratifying. Each piece of art is a step forward in my creative journey.
A Path to Creativity with a Present Made with Love
It was actually my partner Sue who led me to painting.
Sue painted a wave for me as a Christmas present. She had never painted before and given my love for the sea, Sue thought it would be a great gift.
I was so happy I went out the next day and purchased all the art supplies I could.
Buying Too Many Art Supplies and Taking Over the House
Not knowing anything about art or what I needed, I bought way too much.
I guess my art journey started there.
Sue does not paint anymore (she only did the one painting for me), and I took over the house with my supplies.
The Creativity Challenges of Learning
I love finding out new ways to paint and I really enjoy the challenges that come with learning new techniques.
Because I love to paint seascapes, I am never too far from inspiration, given the dynamic nature of the ocean.
The Power of Finding Solitude, Awe & Seascapes
I love to paint Tasmanian seascapes.
I am drawn to the unique beauty and power of the ocean, particularly the west coast of Tasmania.
I often find myself in complete solitude at many Tasmanian beaches bringing a sense of awe and excitement to want to paint the scene in front of me
A Love for Oils and Gouache
I primarily use oils and gouache. Oils are fantastic for their rich, vibrant colours and the ability to blend seamlessly, allowing for intricate details and depth in my work.
I love the flexibility they offer, as I can work on a piece over several days, making adjustments and adding layers to achieve the desired effect.
Gouache, on the other hand, provides a different kind of joy. Its opaque quality and quick drying time make it perfect for creating bold, expressive pieces with a matte finish.
I often use gouache for more spontaneous, experimental works where I can play with color and texture.
Creativity Inspired & Fostered by Nature in Tasmania
Being surrounded by nature, such as forests, mountains, or oceans, inspires me.
The colours, shapes, and tranquility of natural settings often spark new ideas and perspectives.
Engaging with a supportive and diverse community can foster creativity by providing different viewpoints, feedback, and collaborative opportunities.
Exploring the Creative Process
My creative process usually begins with inspiration from my surroundings. I start by sketching rough ideas. Once I have a concept, I then create a loose sketch, refining the idea into a structured form.
Next, I move to layering the oil paints to build depth and texture. Throughout the process, I remain open to adjustments and improvisation, allowing the painting to evolve naturally.
Finally, I focus on the finishing touches, adding details and refining elements to ensure the piece meets my vision.
Once completed, I reflect on the work and seek feedback before considering it finished.
Capturing the Beauty and Mystery of the Ocean
Through my art, I aim to capture the beauty and mystery of the ocean.
The vast expanse of water, with its ever-changing moods.
My seascapes are a celebration of the ocean’s majesty and a reminder of our deep connection to nature.
I want viewers to feel both the awe and the tranquility that the ocean inspires, encouraging them to appreciate and protect this vital part of our planet.
Nature’s Inspiration, Creativity and Community
I like to spend time outdoors and observe the natural world that can provide endless inspiration.
The colours, textures, and patterns found in nature can spark new ideas.
Engaging with other artists through workshops, online forums, or local art groups can provide support and fresh perspectives.
Sharing your work and receiving feedback can be incredibly motivating.
The Power and Rewards of Intentional Planning
Balancing art practice with other aspects of life requires intentional planning and flexibility.
I prioritise my art by setting aside deliberate practice time each week, treating it like any other important commitment.
This helps ensure that I consistently make progress on my projects.
Staying organised with a schedule allows me to manage my time effectively, ensuring that I can meet personal, professional, and creative goals.
