Meet St Helens Gallery Owner Jane Seychell
Meeting people who love art and appreciate all types of art is the best thing about having my gallery.
I often chat to customers about starting their own art journey and the uncertainty of of what to do and where to start.
I love encouraging them to pursue their passion for art, no matter what age they are. I always try to send them away with a little bit of art advice if i can.
If they would like any help on techniques etc I encourage them to reach out and contact me.
Hearing back from them, connecting and seeing what they have created is what gives me the most joy!
A Pop Up Gallery and Following Dreams
I found living in a small coastal town there are limited spaces to showcase art.
Hence, I opened the gallery to have the option to display not only my artwork but to have a place where I could also celebrate and promote the work of other local artists.
The Gallery started as a pop up for six months to test the waters, I have loved it so much I have continued to stay open and will continue to encourage artists of all ages to follow their dreams.
The Jane Seychell Gallery That’s Safely Inside a Bank Is Also a Studio
My gallery is a shared space with a bank! I love hearing the bank customers chat about the art they see on the walls instead of having to look at a blank space.
Knowing the gallery space is a place which brings people happiness is what I love to hear.
My gallery is also my studio where I can create new works and have customers watch a new artwork come to life.
It is also where I have classes for adults and children to learn skills, connect and share their love for art together.
Growing as a Creative Business Owner with the Gallery
Before starting this business I wish I knew their weren’t enough hours in one day to do everything!
I actually thought I would have so much time to spend on my art, however bookwork, art class preparation, customers, ordering and marketing to name a few are all important and all need dedicated time to help the business grow and succeed.
Go For It!
The best business advice I was given is to “Go for it!”
Learn How to Plan Your Incoming and Outgoing Cash Flow
And learn how to do a projected cash flow spread sheet to keep you on track with incoming and outgoing expenses.
Also, have people around you who encourage and support you and your business.
The Joy of Being a Gallery Owner
I find a lot of joy selling and promoting fellow artists and introducing them to new customers.
Knowing that our love and passions for what we make are going to new homes to be admired by friends and family.
As artists we all have different styles and use alternative techniques and mediums.
I find it interesting how people connect and are inspired by certain types of art.
How a Pop Up Gallery Opens Unexpected Doors
Owning a gallery has certainly lead to surprise opportunities I had not anticipated.
Being asked to be part of the Arts Trails Tasmania has definitely been one of those happy surprises.
I am so excited to be part of the exhibition showcasing artists from around Tasmania and the Mainland.
I cannot wait to see and meet new artists and promote their works through my gallery.

Artist Profile Stories
I want there to be more arts and crafts in our world, in our communities and in our own lives. Hopefully you’ve found this blog post inspiring and interesting.
So I’m creating, with your help, Art Trails Tasmania, allowing all of us who feel this love to create more of it.
And the Art Trails Tasmania blog is a key part of making this happen, telling the stories of members. It’s about what they have happening with workshops and classes, exhibitions, open studio trails, where to find their outlets, markets, fairs and festivals so you can shop their creations as well as their art and craft retreats.
Also being shared are the supporters of our artists, the galleries, shops, cafes, art societies and groups, places to stay and artist in residencies.
