Meet Pastel Artist Dianne Horvath
I enjoy being around other artists and finding inspiration from their work.
The Tasmanian landscape inspires me in so many different ways. The variety of colours, atmospheres, animal life and the diverse artistic talent here.
I enjoyed art in school but once I began my working career it did get put to the side.
So, now that I am retired and also have such a supportive husband, I make time to explore different mediums and subjects.
Growing by Attending the Launceston Art Society Workshops
I have attended several workshops run by The Launceston Art Society ,of which I am a member, and these have led me to be more brave at attempting new things.
An Arts and Crafts Room of One’s Own
I work from home in what was once a spare room. I also love to knit so it is also full of other craft “stash” I have a good easel and great work space there.
The Journey to Becoming a Pastel Artist
I began with charcoal and was introduced to soft pastels and fell in love with them.
I do also love pastel pencils. I have quite a selection of different mediums as I go with what takes my fancy sometimes. My most favourite is still soft pastels.
I enjoy workshops as many do. I have run a few from a little studio at a friends.
They are always a lot of fun. I am always amazed at the artwork produced. I do love sharing skills and learning from fellow artists.
The Joy of Constantly Learning and Belonging to a Supportive Community
I enjoy being a part of any art related activity as it is such an inspiring atmosphere and always brings new ideas and friends together.
Our local art group from St Helens Neighbourhood House has had several outings to sketch.
I struggled with finding time to draw. I now commit to a time each week like I would for a dental appointment. No excuses.
I also make sure I have something on the easel on the go and often take my sketchbook with me out and about.
Exploring New Pastel Subjects
I like to challenge myself with new subjects and enjoy several online tutorials.
Learning from the Masters
I find coping the masters very helpful.
Also, I do the things I most enjoy often but I also find that doing a subject I would not normally do helps build my artistic skills.
Having a list of “prompts” is also a way I find helpful to encourage more skilful art.
About the Artist
After attending a casual art group in 2004 in St Helens I was hooked on pastels.
Now that I am retired I find I make more time for the things I enjoy in life.
My art is very important to me and my mental health, and probably my husband’s. He has encouraged me always.
I have found most of my friends are art lovers also.

So I’m creating, with your help, Art Trails Tasmania, allowing all of us who feel this love to create more of it.
And the Art Trails Tasmania blog is a key part of making this happen, telling the stories of members. It’s about what they have happening with workshops and classes, exhibitions, open studio trails, where to find their outlets, markets, fairs and festivals so you can shop their creations as well as their art and craft retreats.
Also being shared are the supporters of our artists, the galleries, shops, cafes, art societies and groups, places to stay and artist in residencies.
